Positive Effects of Full-day School

Full-day school is a hot topic in Indonesia this year. This controversial concept was announced by Muhajir Effendi, Education and Culture Minister a year ago. Effendi thought that Indonesia’s educational world ranking was still low, so he planned to improve the Indonesian education by adding the school hours from 7 a. m. until 4 p. m. or 5 p. m. Most of the Indonesian parents do not agree with his plan because their children will be too tired from the school. Full-day school may give negative effects for the children, but I think there must a bunch of positive effects for the students and the parents.
During the full-day school, the parents will feel safe knowing their children are at school. When the school runs like usual, the students can go home at 1 p. m. or 2 p. m. At this time, not every student will go straight to their home. Some of them stay in the school to do the club activity or have a group study, but some students may be involved in the negative activity. Their parents must be worried. The full-day school concept is to prevent them to be involved in the negative community like a gangster that harms other people.
In junior and senior high school, the school will require their students to join minimum one of the extracurriculars like art, dance, taekwondo, or basketball. The extracurriculars is the place where they can polish their skill, learn some skill, and build their character. This is an obligation for students, but many of them ignore it. Students think that it is boring, not related to their subjects, and they think the teacher doesn’t mind if they do not join an extra-curricular. They choose to have fun with their friends outside the school and sometimes they will lie to their parents that they will come home late because they have an extra-curricular at school, but actually, they hang out with their friends to smoke or do something improper. The full-day school will limit their time to do improper things because the teacher will monitor them until they finish the day in the school. When they go back home, they will choose to rest.
There is no homework in full-day school concept. The student’s burden is reduced because there is no more homework for them. After they back from the school they can rest or do something that not related to the school. They can enjoy their weekend without homework. This is one of the advantages of full-day school.
Every change of some programs may have pro and contra reaction from the citizen and full-day school may bring some negative effects. If we look closely and learn more about it, we can see many positive effects for the children. This program planned to make our next generations have good attitude and future. Even though they are struggling right now, in the future their character will be shaped. So, we must think positive about this program to get positive effects.

THE HARMFUL STEREOTYPE

It is not rare for us to accused someone because of their look or appearance. We often to gossiping them before we know who they really are. For example, when we see a man that has a feminine figure, automatically most of us think that he is gay, he likes the man. In reality, he just has that kind of figure because of his environment or other aspects, and he still loves women. This kind of thinking is what we called prejudice. Prejudice exists because of there are stereotypes. Stereotypes are grouping someone based on their looks, their origin, their behavior, et cetera. In daily life, we used to stereotype someone (in a negative way) without realizing it that it is not right. There are two kinds of stereotypes, in the positive way and negative way. Positive stereotypes usually content a compliment about good things that some people or group has done like we respect Japanese people because they are hard workers and they appreciate the time. We also think that most of ...

Violence Toward Rohingya

Nowadays, there are so many crises about humanity. The most terrible humanitarian crisis today is being experienced by Rohingya refugees in Rakhine, Myanmar. They have been removed from Myanmar or Burma with violation by Myanmar’s security forces. The security forces had burn Rohingya houses, kill the Rohingya’s children, kidnap, and rape the Rohingya’s women and young girls. Those actions are so inhuman, cannot be tolerable, and of course against Buddhist rules.            Violence that Myanmar’s security forces did to Rohingya’s is inhumane. The International Organization for Migration's Director General William Lacy Swing said that particularly women and girls, but also men and boys, have been targeted for. They are at risk of further exploitation, violence and abuse simply because of their gender, age and status in society. This fact reflect that the security forces did not apply their own religion’s moral to the...
